Certain Silence Is Golden In Your Relationship

Silence is golden…for relationships.

When I was younger, I was really concerned with filling the silence. Thinking that if my partner and I weren't talking/laughing/or having a conversation, we weren't connecting or something was wrong. I'm glad those insecurities have faded away. That's exhausting and untrue.

study from the University of Reading found that when couples are able to sit in silence – not because they are mad at one another but because they are comfortable just being together and not saying a word – it’s a sign of a healthy relationship. Think of you both quietly sitting on the couch reading or listening to music. According to researchers, that’s actually a sign of emotional connection.

“We don’t always need to fill up the space with conversation,” said University of Reading psychologist Netta Weinstein. “Silent moments can be powerful ways to connect.”
