Max McNown Reveals the Meaning Behind His New Album, 'Leave On A Light'

Max McNown Opens Up About Viral Fame, Starbucks Roots and New Album on The Bobby Bones Show

Max McNown stopped by The Bobby Bones Show, and the rising country star didn't hold back — talking about his unconventional path to fame, the surprising social media strategy that launched his career, and the deeply personal story behind his upcoming album, Leave On A Light.

From Oregon Pier to Nashville Stages

Max grew up in West Linn and Bend, Oregon, and didn't pick up a guitar until he was 21. Before that, music was mostly a dream he wasn't sure he could chase. He credits Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan with giving him the confidence to sing in his own voice after years of feeling like his vocals didn't fit the pop sound he grew up loving.

His first steps into music happened while working as an opening barista at a Starbucks in Southern California. After his shift ended around noon, he'd head to the pier and busk for a couple hours at a time, several days a week — making more money singing than he did steaming milk.

"At the worst case, nobody cares, and at the best case, nobody cares. Just go out there and do it to show yourself that you can do it," Max recalled a coworker telling him — advice that pushed him to perform in public for the first time.

The Wild Story Behind His Viral Breakout

Here's where things get interesting. Struggling to stand out among millions of people posting cover songs, Max landed on an unlikely strategy: recording reaction videos on Omegle, the now-defunct random video chat site. He'd pop into strangers' chats, offer to sing for them, and post their genuine reactions online.

It worked. His original song "Freezing in November" hit a million streams within three months after he used the same format to debut it. His follow-up, "You in the Pines," exploded even faster — racking up 16 million views in a single week. The catch? The song wasn't ready to release yet, and by the time it came out three months later, Max says he'd missed the momentum entirely.

"I look back at that as a mistake in my career," he admitted, "but everybody makes mistakes."

Moving to Nashville — and Leaving Oregon Behind

After three songwriting trips to Nashville, including the session that produced his breakout track "A Lot More Free," Max made the move permanent. He pointed to the city's built-in music infrastructure and welcoming creative community as the deciding factors, even though he still misses Oregon's outdoors — and the state's underrepresented music scene, which he says produced few role models for him growing up beyond fellow Oregonian Matt Kearney (who, Max revealed, is now a close friend and sang at his own engagement).

The Story Behind "Leave On A Light"

Max's upcoming album, out September 25, takes its title from a line in his song "Slow Down." He explained the phrase as a thank-you to the people who keep him grounded — his wife, parents and close friends — while he's on the road.

He also shared that some of his most personal songs, like "Firstborn Daughter" and "Better Me For You," have surprised him the most. Written as deeply specific stories about his own wife, both ended up resonating far beyond what he expected once released.

"I think it was Rick Rubin that said the best thing you can do for your fans is write music for yourself," Max said, describing how he tries to resist the pull to chase a hit and instead stay true to his own experiences.

Max just wrapped the final show of his Summer Vacation Tour in New York, with a stop at the Bourbon & Beyond festival still ahead. Leave On A Light drops September 25 — follow Max McNown @maxmcnown for tour dates and updates.
