Science-Backed Ways To Detox Your Body

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a one-day miracle fix to help you feel better after overindulging? Unfortunately, there’s no magic fix for getting back on track after the holidays, a vacation or a weekend of overdoing it. Detox diets and cleanses are a scam, but hitting the reset button every so often can help.

These tips are backed by science and actually work to help you cleanse, de-bloat and get your diet and health where you want them.

  • Start your day with lemon water - The pectin in the lemon helps with digestion and you can enjoy your lemon hot or cold first thing in the morning to kick off the day with healthy choices.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast - Fuel yourself with food to get your metabolism going after sleeping. Skip the bread and cereal and focus on protein, like eggs, or a gut-healthy smoothie.
  • Clean up your diet - Eat whole, real foods and ditch the packaged, processed foods, yep even the “healthy” versions. Don’t skip meals and get plenty of healthy fats from nuts, seeds, olives and avocado. If you’re struggling, take it one healthy meal at a time and push yourself to keep it going.
  • Enjoy a cup of tea - Dandelion tea, specifically, can help improve digestion, but green tea is also great for an antioxidant and metabolic boost.
  • Be active - Getting your heart rate up will increase blood flow, which helps your body flush out toxins on its own. Breaking a sweat will also help get you in a better mindset and that can encourage you to do it again tomorrow.
  • End your shower with a blast of cold water - It might not sound soothing, but it can leave you feeling instantly energized. Plus, cold water can reduce inflammation and some experts say it can boost the immune system. According to a recent study, people who showered in cold water for 30, 60, or 90 seconds took 29% fewer sick days than people who didn’t.
  • Turn off your phone - The beeps, buzzes and constant notifications can negatively impact your mental and emotional state, as well as your health. A study that’s been going on since 2015, called the Do Not Disturb Challenge - asks people to turn their phones off for 24 hours. Many who do immediately feel less stressed, so much so that two-thirds of participants regularly turn their phones off and after two years, continue feeling less distracted and stressed.
